We lost him this week and I found it interesting that Merlin was often mentioned when discussing his long-running and quite diverse career.

Any thoughts about his best episode in the series?

Small tribute to Mordred

Just dropping by to say that after eleven freaking years I am STILL absolutely, passionately, never-endingly in love with Mordred.

It's not just Merlin BBC's Mordred, of course, but that one's the one who started it all. And it's always his face I picture (Hello? what you seen that nose?? Greek statue shit.). He was the character who moved me the most, and there is still something about him - his composure, his way of talking, of being - that I keep coming back to when I create a young male character in my writing.

It was also John Newbolt's play Mordred: A Tragedy that made this obsession last so long, so in honour of this I'll share my favourite verses from it, spoken by a version of Mordred who embodies anarchy in its deepest and most compassionate, life-loving way :

Life is not a mummer's dance that we should walk it

Stiffly composed and following one by one the same set figure ;

It is more orderly when ordered least, and only then secure

From waywardness when each man's acts are flowers

Of his own rooted will.

What is your favourite Merlin fic?

Hi everyone!

Happy new year and thanks to everyone for joining my little comm. I knew there were still Merlin fans around!

To get things started, I have a question:
What is your favourite Merlin fic?
However, you can choose only one... for now. We have 16 years of fanfic to get through so I figure we should space things out a bit.

My current favourite is a recent fic, first published in 2021.

Seeds of Darkness (115359 words) by N16
Relationships: Merlin & Arthur Pendragon (Merlin), Merlin & Mordred (Merlin), Arthur/Gwen (background)

Everything seems to be going well; Camelot has enjoyed three years of peace, the queen has been cleansed from Morgana’s brainwashing, and the future looks bright. But Arthur begins to realize that even as Camelot flowers, the seeds of her destruction are being sown. His sister's vengeance draws nearer. One of his most loyal knights is dead, and another is destined to kill him. A sorcerer is protecting him. And his closest friend is losing the battle against a darkness Arthur never even realized he was fighting. And soon it will all end, one way or another.

N16 is a fantastic writer of Merlin genfic and I definitely recommend all their fics. I especially enjoyed this one because while I loved the series finale, I always wanted to see more of what Arthur and Merlin's relationship would look like after a magic reveal and this fic is immensely satisfying in that regard.

But it's always an amazing story in it's own right, with a great exploration of Arthur & Merlin, and while it goes AU after s05e10, some days I wish it were actually canon.

Welcome to merlin_bbc, a community for all things related to the TV show Merlin, yes, the one that aired on the BBC over 10 years ago.

Why am I making a comm for a TV show that ended 10 years ago? Well, I got really into Merlin again this year, rewatched the entire series, and thought why not? King Arthur is, after all, foretold to return one day so why not a dreamwidth comm.

Who can post and what is allowed? Posting is open to everyone, for any kind of Merlin related content. See the comm profile for more information.

How can I get involved? To start with, you can join the friending meme or sign up to host a post. While I don't have a specific posting schedule for this comm, I do plan to have some structured posts for recs and discussions. If you have any suggestions for other types of content or would like to get involved, please let me know.

Host a Post!

Since I am not sure how much new Merlin content is posted on Dreamwidth these days, to encourage posting I am asking for volunteers to "host a post"!

Basically, you claim a topic, write a little manifesto about it, post it to the comm and then we all have fun talking about it in the comments. Along the lines of ship_manifesto but in a more casual sense as there are no content requirements and the point is more remembering how much we loved this show as opposed to convincing people why your ship or character is better than others.

The topics you can volunteer for are:

Characters
Relationships or groups (platonic or romantic, canon or otherwise)
Locations, objects, or events
Individual scenes or episodes
Tropes, themes or motifs
Actors

Basically, anything you can think of. I also recommend focusing on a specific aspect, especially for more popular items.

For example, don't just volunteer for Arthur/Merlin, volunteer for Arthur/Merlin in Season 1, or Modern AUs, or their campfire conversation in 5x05 The Disir episode, etc. Feel free to get extremely specific with your topic. There is a lot we could talk about so let's spread it out.

As mentioned, there are no formal requirements, word lengths or structure for these posts. You can title and include whatever you like but as a suggestion you can include a combination of things like:

Background, history, explanations, recaps, or meta about your topic
Your personal opinions
Asking other people's opinions
Quotes
Images or gifs
Fanwork recommendations (fic, art, vids, etc)

People should feel free to engage with your post by furthering the discussion of the topic, asking questions of their own or making their own fanwork recommendations.

There is also no formal deadline for posting. I will compile a list of all the claimed topics here as a record but you can post them to the comm whenever you want. After a couple of months I may wipe the current roster and open claims again but that is more to encourage posting and you are welcome to sign up for the exact same topic again. You may only claim one topic at a time, but feel free to claim another topic once you have posted your previous one.

I would also prefer these are posted to the directly to the comm to encourage conversation here but you are free to cross-post or link them elsewhere.

If you are interested, please comment below with your choice of topic.
